Partnering with Wild Hearts

Darah Skean • September 10, 2024

I've learned to build connections with humans and horses alike that encourage me to stay present and focus on what is important in the moment.

Before joining Wild Hearts, I worked as a clinical therapist in the Upstate in both higher education and private practice and also was a mixed media artist. I recognize the power of expressive art and somatic work as I'm beginning to shift my focus away from talk therapy. I have always been curious about exploring alternative approaches to how we as humans heal – it's part of what led me to Wild Hearts!

I first met Janine and some of the facilitators at the Sip 'n Stroll event in downtown Seneca last fall. I followed up with both Jess and Janine to ask more about the center and how I could get involved. Honestly, from the moment I parked my car and set foot onto the farm I felt a deep sense of calm that I couldn't quite describe. Although I didn't have much prior experience working with horses, I was eager to observe and learn from their perspective. Through volunteer training I learned that my personal values aligned with those of Wild Hearts, and I'm drawn to such a supportive environment.

Over time I have gained insight from how horses interact with one another as well as how they build connections with their clients and facilitators. Words can't describe the degree of healing that takes place as trust is built between a client and their horse – it's an incredible thing to see happen. Throughout my time at Wild Hearts I've experienced such a positive environment – one that's open to learning and feedback, which is so rare to find. I notice myself needing to take breaths and regulate my nervous system during sessions, which in turn reminds me that I am part of something bigger. I have built connections with humans and horses alike that encourage me to stay present and focus on what is important in the moment.

I feel a special connection to Maddie, as we worked closely together during volunteer training. She came to the farm roughly the same time I started training, and I could recognize her hesitation to trust this partnership process, as it somewhat mirrored my own hesitation. Through our few weeks of being partnered together under Ginger's guidance, we were able to grow and learn together.
